Why everyone refers to the Italian sandwich as a "panini" or "panini"?

Someone knows why the Italian word for sandwiches so bad killed in America? Here the word is treated as a singular form, so people called for "a panini "in restaurants, or talking about the" great paninis "he had somewhere. To put an English plural "s" at the end of "Panini" makes it even more absurd. "Sandwicheses?" Sincerely. Can anyone explain who is responsible for this error which has now unfortunately become very common?

Of course Americanized Italian restaurants contain the term because it sells. I feel the same with false ideas, such as fajitas that everyone seems to label as Mexicans.
